The Punjab government has made an exciting announcement: a tram service will soon grace the streets of Lahore, with operations set to commence in February 2026.

Transport Minister Bilal Akbar shared this news, highlighting that the green light for the project came after a successful trial run. The initial phase will link Thokar to Harbanspura, introducing a fresh mode of transport for the city’s bustling residents.

Capacity and Investment Insights

Each tram is crafted to accommodate up to 270 passengers, marking a substantial enhancement to Lahore’s public transportation landscape. This ambitious project, estimated at around $3 million, is being brought to life in partnership with experts from Punjab NESPAK and the Punjab Mass Transit Authority. These specialists recently journeyed to China for consultations, infusing international expertise into local transit solutions.

But Lahore’s tram system is just the beginning. The government is also laying plans for new metro train networks in Faisalabad and Gujranwala. The Faisalabad metro is anticipated to cater to 300,000 commuters each day, backed by an investment of $110 million. Meanwhile, the Gujranwala initiative aspires to support 140,000 daily travelers with a budget of $50 million.

Minister Akbar emphasized that these ventures are integral to Punjab’s mission to combat air pollution caused by motorcycles and other vehicles. By enhancing urban mobility, these projects aim to breathe new life into the environment and improve the quality of life for citizens.
