Hyundai is taking a different route toward electrification with the upcoming Santa Fe EREV. Scheduled to arrive in the first half of 2027, the new version is expected to offer more than 600 miles, or roughly 965 km, of total driving range while keeping electric propulsion at the center of the driving experience. Hyundai says the vehicle will be built at its Alabama manufacturing facility in the United States.

For Pakistani buyers, the interesting part is not simply the range figure. The Santa Fe EREV could represent a practical middle ground for drivers who want the smooth, responsive feel of an EV but are not ready to depend entirely on public charging infrastructure.

What Is an EREV?

EREV stands for Extended-Range Electric Vehicle. You may also see the term REEV, or Range-Extended Electric Vehicle, used for essentially the same concept.

The key difference from a conventional hybrid is how the vehicle is driven. In an EREV, the electric motor is primarily responsible for moving the vehicle, while the petrol engine is used to generate electricity when the battery needs additional energy. Hyundai has previously described its EREV system as an electric-drive setup in which the engine is used for battery charging.

That means the experience is closer to driving an EV than a traditional hybrid. You get electric motor response and instant torque, while the petrol engine provides a backup source of energy for longer journeys.

There is no confirmed Pakistani launch announcement yet, so it would be premature to treat the Santa Fe EREV as an upcoming model for Pakistan.

What can be said is that the technology addresses several issues that matter to Pakistani SUV buyers: long-distance usability, fuel dependence, charging availability and the desire for a more electrified driving experience.

If Hyundai eventually introduces the Santa Fe EREV in Pakistan, pricing, taxation, specifications, warranty coverage and after-sales support will ultimately determine how attractive it is locally.

What We Still Don’t Know

Hyundai has confirmed the launch timing, total-range target and U.S. production plans, but several important details remain undisclosed.

The final battery capacity, electric-only range, engine specification, combined output, charging capability, fuel consumption, drivetrain configuration for the production model and Pakistan availability are still questions for Hyundai to answer closer to launch. 

That makes the current 965 km figure interesting, but it should be viewed as a manufacturer target rather than a promise of what every driver will achieve in everyday conditions.

The Bigger Picture

The Santa Fe EREV shows that Hyundai is not treating electrification as a simple choice between petrol cars and full EVs. Instead, the company is exploring a powertrain that keeps electric driving at the center while using a petrol engine to address range and charging concerns.

For Pakistan, that approach could be particularly relevant. If the technology arrives with competitive pricing and suitable after-sales support, an EREV SUV could appeal to buyers who want the benefits of electric driving without giving up the convenience of petrol-backed long-distance travel.
