Why Alto & Every Prices Jumped More: The Tax Change Explained

The main reason for the bigger price hikes on the Alto and Every is a GST increase specifically targeting smaller cars. In the new 2025-26 budget, the government raised the General Sales Tax (GST), a tax added when you buy something, from 12.5% to 18% for vehicles with engines 850cc or smaller. Because both the Suzuki Alto and Suzuki Every have engines in this small size category, they got hit by two extra charges: this significant 5.5% GST increase plus the brand-new 1% NEV levy (a fee for non-electric vehicles).

Other popular Suzuki cars, like the Swift and Cultus, have larger engines (over 850cc). They only faced the new 1% NEV levy, escaping the higher GST. Interestingly, the Ravi van, despite its small 800cc engine, already paid 18% GST because it’s classed as a commercial vehicle. This difference in tax rules clearly explains why the Alto and Every saw much sharper price surges compared to other Suzuki models.
