Tesla Unveils Expensive Model Y Costing $70,000 in Indian Market

Tesla has finally launched its very first showroom in India! The new store is located in Mumbai. Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, officially opened it, and a small group of guests attended the special event. This exciting step comes after Tesla, led by Elon Musk, showed interest in India for years but held back because of India’s high taxes on bringing in electric vehicles from other countries.

Elon Musk once said India holds “more promise than any large nation.” However, he also pointed out the problem with India’s costly import duties. For a long time, Tesla asked Indian officials to lower these taxes. They wanted to see if people in India would buy their cars before deciding to build a factory there. Until recently, India didn’t agree. Instead, India told Tesla and other big car companies they needed to start making vehicles locally first. Only then would India consider offering them any financial help or benefits.

India’s New EV Tax Rule & Tesla’s Plans

India made a big change to its electric car rules in March. The government slashed import taxes on these vehicles down to just 15%. Before, these taxes were super high, between 70% and 100%. But there’s a condition: the car must cost less than $35,000, and the company must promise to build a factory in India within three years. This new India EV policy tries to please companies like Tesla, who wanted to bring in cars first, while still pushing for local manufacturing.

However, Tesla hasn’t announced plans for an Indian factory yet. Instead, news reports say Tesla will start selling cars shipped from its China factory very soon, maybe by late August. Because these imported Tesla cars won’t be made in India and likely cost more than $35,000, they won’t get the new low 15% tax. They’ll have to pay the old, much higher taxes, keeping them as expensive luxury cars for now.

Tesla India enters a market where electric cars are growing but still rare. Data shows only about 100,000 EVs sold in India during 2024. That’s less than 3 out of every 100 new cars bought. Since Tesla’s prices are far above what most Indians can pay, the company probably won’t try to sell to regular buyers immediately. They’ll focus on the luxury segment first.

Indian analysts note Tesla’s pricing competes with luxury brands, not local EV makers. They predict monthly sales will start around 500 to 700 units, later settling around 200 to 300. Tesla isn’t aiming for high sales numbers right away, the analysts add. Instead, the company will focus on building its brand presence rather than chasing big sales numbers initially.

Tesla’s India launch comes amid bigger struggles globally. Sales have slowed in the US and Europe. Cheaper Chinese brands like BYD are increasing competition. The global EV market is crowded; Tesla isn’t the only top player anymore.

Trade Talks & Next Steps

India and the United States are currently discussing trade deals, including car import taxes. Back in February, Elon Musk also met privately with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington. Though no big news came out right then, many saw this chat as helping prepare for Tesla’s future in India.

For now, Tesla entering India is mostly about getting started, not growing fast. Opening a Mumbai showroom is a first move. The real question is: will Tesla next invest in building cars locally here? If not, their vehicles will stay too expensive for most Indian buyers. Tesla would then only sell to the small, high-end part of this new and expanding market.
