Used car imports are a debating topic nowadays in Pakistan. The new policy introduced by the government has tightened the rules. The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved stricter regulations on the import scheme.

If you are looking to import a used car in Pakistan, then you must know about the latest rules and policies. Let’s explore what new guidelines you must know before importing a used car.

Abolishment of the Personal Baggage Scheme

One of the major changes that we can notice is the abolition of the Personal Baggage Scheme. Yes, you read it right. This new rule has limited the personal vehicle import to two channels only, which include the Transfer of Residence and Gift Schemes.

The government has decided to end the personal baggage scheme. This decision has been made with the agreement between the IMF and Pakistan during ongoing loan negotiations.

Stricter Safety and Environmental Standards

The new rules and regulations have also implemented the safety and environmental standards for commercial imports. The imported vehicle has to meet those standards. It means now the vehicle has to pass the stricter road safety and emission regulations in Pakistan.

This step is somehow taken for the betterment of Pakistan and to make it eco-friendly. This step adds its value in the wellness and health of all Pakistanis.

Increased Waiting Period and Ownership Restrictions

Another update that you can notice is the extension of the waiting period. Previously, owners had to wait for two years before selling or transferring an imported car. Now, an extra year has been added, and owners will now wait for three years.

This step has been taken to reduce the concept of importing vehicles solely for resale purposes. Now, it may become a little harder to sell imported cars in Pakistan.

When Will These Changes Take Effect?

The new regulations and policies have been improved by the ECC. However, it will not be effective until the Statutory Regulatory Order (SRO) is issued by the government of Pakistan.

When the SRO is announced, these rules will become official and affect the pathway of importers.

What This Means for Used Car Importers

The government’s decision to introduce these policies is a direct response to economic challenges & agreement with the IMF. These modifications will not improve the quality of imported cars, but also make it harder for a person to bring so many cars under personal schemes.

If you are thinking of importing a used car, then you should keep checking the policies and import the best quality vehicle. Stay connected with Wise Wheels for more updates on imported car policies.
