Imported cars have their own importance. They provide advanced features, superior quality, and more compared to the local market. The overseas Pakistanis and local residents have been importing cars of their own choice easily in the past years, but now it might not be that easy.

The government of Pakistan has introduced important changes in the Vehicle Import Policy 2026. These amendments mainly affect the overseas Pakistanis who are looking to import cars to Pakistan. There was a lot of confusion because the old rules had loopholes. This revised policy has maximized those gaps and made the process transparent and fair for everyone.

Why the Policy Was Changed

For many years, the vehicle import schemes were being misused. Some people import cars under personal or gift schemes and then sell them for a heavy profit. This misuse has not only caused a loss in the economy but also has put pressure on foreign exchange reserves.

The government of Pakistan has reviewed the situation and decided to make changes. The new revised policy mainly focuses on genuine personal use. The commercial activity has been avoided, which was hidden under welfare schemes.

Vehicle Age Limit to Only 3 Years

The main change in the policy is about the vehicle age limit.

Under the revised policy:

  • Only used vehicles up to 3 years (36 months) old can be imported.
  • Older vehicles are no longer allowed under any scheme.

This decision helps in reducing pollution, improving road safety, and improving vehicle import quality in Pakistan.

Personal Baggage Option Completely Removed

Previously, vehicles could be imported under personal baggage, which became the most misused route. Now: Many people were importing vehicles under personal baggage, which became the most misused route.

The revised policy includes:

  • The personal baggage option is fully removed
  • Vehicles can only be imported through approved schemes

This single change has made the policy much clearer and more controlled.

Three Approved Import Schemes

The welfare schemes have been kept by the Government of Pakistan for overseas Pakistanis. But the rules have become clearer and stronger. Let’s explore the three approved schemes of the Import Vehicle Policy:

SRO

Transfer of Residence Scheme

This scheme is for those Pakistanis who are returning forever.

Under the new policy:

  • The vehicle needs to be imported from the same country the person was residing in.
  • Proper proof of residence is compulsory.

Gift Scheme

Under this scheme:

  • A vehicle can be given to eligible family members.
  • All safety and environmental rules have to be applied.
  • The vehicle is not immediately available for sale.

Three-Year Timeline Scheme

The meaning of “last three years” is now clearly defined:

  • It means 850 days since the Goods Declaration date.
  • This eliminates confusion and misuse.

One-Year Non-Transfer Rule

A very important rule introduced is:

  • Vehicles imported under the Gift or Transfer of Residence schemes cannot be sold or transferred for one year.

This rule ensures that:

  • Vehicles are imported for personal use
  • Commercial reselling is discouraged
  • Market manipulation is reduced

Strong Focus on Safety and Environment

The policy has been revised to apply the commercial level of safety and environmental standards to all imported vehicles, even under the welfare schemes. This means:

  • Vehicles must meet emission standards
  • Unsafe or heavily modified cars can be rejected
  • Environmental impact is taken seriously

This is a positive step for public health and road safety.

Protection of Foreign Exchange

The foreign exchange situation in Pakistan is one of the major causes for such changes.

The policy aims to:

  • Stop Unnecessary Flowing out of Foreign Currency
  • Stoppage of import of fake or non-genuine goods.
  • Only allow verified and documented cases. Every import is going to have stricter checks on it.
