Pakistan is preparing to overhaul its fuel pricing mechanism as the federal government has approved a new system that will allow petrol and diesel prices to be updated every day instead of following the existing periodic review schedule. The move is aimed at making domestic fuel prices more responsive to changes in the global oil market, especially during periods of international uncertainty.

Daily Fuel Price Revisions to Be Managed by OGRA

Speaking during a joint press briefing, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced that the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) will be responsible for calculating and announcing petrol and diesel prices on a daily basis.

According to the minister, the decision comes as international crude oil markets continue to experience rapid price swings, largely influenced by ongoing geopolitical tensions, including developments involving Iran and the United States.

Government Approvals No Longer Required

One of the biggest changes under the new framework is that fuel price adjustments will no longer require approvals from the petroleum minister, information minister, or other federal authorities. Instead, OGRA will independently determine and issue the revised fuel prices based on its pricing methodology. The goal is to make the process faster, more transparent, and less dependent on administrative approvals.

Greater Transparency in Fuel Pricing

The government also plans to increase transparency by requiring OGRA to publicly share the key factors behind every price revision.

This will include:

  • The pricing formula used to calculate retail fuel prices.
  • International oil price benchmarks.
  • Other market factors that influence petrol and diesel rates in Pakistan.

Officials believe this approach will help consumers better understand why fuel prices increase or decrease on any given day.

Why the Government Is Changing the Pricing System

Global energy markets have become increasingly volatile in recent months due to geopolitical developments and fluctuating crude oil prices. Under the previous pricing mechanism, changes in international oil prices could take time to be reflected in local fuel rates. By introducing daily revisions, the government aims to align domestic prices more closely with international market conditions while reducing delays in price adjustments.

When Will the New System Start?

Although the policy has been announced, the government has not yet confirmed the official implementation date for the daily fuel price revision system. Further details regarding the rollout are expected once OGRA finalizes the operational framework.

What This Means for Consumers

If implemented, motorists and businesses may notice more frequent changes in petrol and diesel prices. While this could result in prices changing more often, it would also allow reductions in international oil prices to be reflected more quickly in Pakistan. The new mechanism represents a significant shift in Pakistan’s fuel pricing policy and is expected to make fuel prices more closely aligned with global market movements while improving transparency in the pricing process.
