Have you ever wondered whether the rules are applicable to all or just to a specific class or number of people? In Lahore, the traffic police are responding to this question with a clear “yes,” launching a huge operation against people who’ve repeatedly failed to submit their e-challans. This time, there aren’t any exemptions, not even for public vehicles.

The Notable Action By “CTO” Lahore

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Dr. Athar Waheed is leading this unprecedented crackdown, focusing on the most violated 1,000 vehicles that have outstanding fines. To ensure that this isn’t an exercise in paper or just a verbal statement, twelve dedicated recovery teams were formed. They are using advanced Safe City surveillance data to identify and track down cars that are not in compliance with the law in the city and have some pending fines to pay, and collecting fines right on the exact spot.

As of now, the outcomes are already being reported in the media, with more than 300 vehicles being caught. One shocking revelation is that, one motorbike was found to have accrued the staggering sum of 313 traffic violations, which amounts to a staggering fine of PKR 335,300. It certainly puts our frequent parking tickets into perspective!

Government Vehicles Are Not Exempt

The narrative takes an intriguing twist as the Traffic Police reveal a startling truth: a significant number of vehicles owned by government departments rank among the most frequent violators of traffic regulations.

Now, an exhaustive list describing these official vehicles has been compiled, and swift action is on the edge. The traffic department is urging all citizens, including public servants, to pay their outstanding fines to prevent further legal repercussions.

A shocking report from the City Traffic Police (CTP) sheds light on the severity of this issue. It discloses that an astounding 3,896 official vehicles, belonging to senior government officials across 73 departments, have been caught breaching traffic laws in Lahore, with many offenders repeating their shady actions.

The report draws attention to several key Govt. departments involved in these violations, describing a clear picture of the widespread disregard for traffic rules among those in positions of authority.

The report highlights some of the major departments involved:

Department No of Vehicles
Punjab Police 496
Services & General Administration Department (S&GAD) 358
Lahore Electricity Supply Company (LESCO) 328
WAPDA 300
Livestock & Dairy Department 184
PTCL 181
Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Ltd (SNGPL) 130
Irrigation Department 122
Punjab Food Authority (PFA) 117
Deputy Commissioner’s Office 107
National Highways Authority 104
Lahore Cantonment Board 102
Agriculture Department 99
Lahore Development Authority (LDA) 89
Pakistan Railways 76
Punjab Revenue Authority 69
Punjab Health Department 68
Punjab Horticulture Authority 61
Punjab Home Department 42
Ring Road Authority 41
Punjab Board of Revenue 40
Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission 37
Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) 31

The most troubling thing for a lot of people is the fact that people who are in charge of these vehicles have repeatedly failed to pay fees. This lack of action has forced traffic police chiefs to send letters not only to “identify violators and collect fees as well as to take immediate actions against them.

In a striking divergence from violation tradition, the traffic police have filed a staggering 4,541 FIRs for traffic violations in Lahore within just the past 10 days, resulting in numerous individuals being apprehended on the scene.

The operation doesn’t only focus on getting rid of a backlog of fines, it’s a powerful and important statement of accountability and the equal use of the law. It’s clear that the Lahore Traffic Police are sending a clear message that regardless of whether you’re a citizen or a top-ranking official, traffic regulations are for all and any violation of them is met with a penalty.
