After nearly ten years of serving the people of Pakistan, Careem has revealed it will halt its ride-hailing services as of July 18, 2025. Mudassir Sheikha, the company’s CEO and co-founder, shared this pivotal update in a heartfelt post on LinkedIn, describing it as a “new chapter” for Careem. He acknowledged the profound difficulty of this choice, underscoring that it was essential due to the numerous challenges the company has encountered.

This decision marks a significant turning point for Careem, reflecting both the challenges faced and the need for transformation. As the city streets grow quieter without their familiar green cars, Careem’s departure from the ride-hailing scene leaves a notable gap. The team remains committed to navigating this transition with strength and resilience, ensuring that this moment leads to new opportunities ahead.

It is Because

Sheikha revealed that the choice to suspend ride-hailing services stemmed from tough economic conditions in Pakistan, fierce competition, and challenges in securing global investments.

These elements made it hard to support the necessary investment for maintaining a safe and dependable service. He characterised the suspension as the “close of a legendary chapter,” a story forged through determination, hard work, and unwavering dedication.

The vibrant streets of bustling cities, once alive with the hum of engines and the chatter of satisfied riders, now feel quieter. This decision marks a significant shift, leaving behind memories of convenience and innovation that transformed everyday travel. The end of this journey resonates deeply, echoing the spirit of an era defined by ambition and resilience.

Pakistan’s Careem: Its Legacy in the Country

Careem launched in Pakistan back in October 2015 and quickly became essential and popular between millions of people in the country. It offered safe, on-demand rides, quick, and created a vital income source for drivers, called “captains.” Beyond rides, Careem significantly boosted Pakistan’s digital growth:

  • Driving smartphone use: More people needed phones to use the service.
  • Boosting digital payments: It popularized cashless transactions.
  • Improving infrastructure: Careem helped shape better digital rules and systems.

Sheikha specifically applauded the Careem Pakistan team. He highlighted their bold vision, strong determination, and core mission: creating millions of captain jobs. Importantly, Careem’s success opened doors, making Pakistan a welcoming place for many other local and international digital businesses to start and thrive.

Careem’s Next Chapter: From Ride-Hailing to an “Everything App”

The good news is, Careem is not leaving the country. While its ride-hailing service is stopping, the company is shifting gears to focus on something new: Careem Technologies.

This fresh branch is building an “Everything App” designed specifically for Pakistan. Imagine one app for ordering food, buying groceries, making payments, and much more – that’s the goal!

Careem Technologies is already a big employer here, with nearly 400 people working with them locally. And they plan to grow even more! Expect over 100 new job openings and an expanded program for graduates. This shows Careem’s strong commitment to boosting Pakistan’s tech scene.

What about your Careem Wallet? Don’t worry! If you have money left in your account, Careem will explain exactly how to get your refunds. Their customer support team (Careem Care) will be available until September 18th to help solve any remaining issues.

So, while saying goodbye to the ride service might feel like an ending, it’s really just a new chapter. Careem’s adventure in Pakistan continues. They’re staying right here, aiming to innovate and play a vital role in the country’s digital growth.
