In a surprising turn of events, the petrol price in Pakistan will not change over the next two weeks, effective from April 16, 2025. Despite earlier predictions of a price drop, the Finance Ministry confirmed that “the government has decided to maintain the prices of petroleum products at the current level.”

Current Petrol Prices in Pakistan

Here’s a quick overview:

MS Petrol: The petrol price stays at Rs. 254.63 per liter, unchanged since March 29, 2025.

High-Speed Diesel (HSD): Likewise, High-Speed Diesel (HSD) remains steady at Rs. 258.64 per liter.

What Was Expected

Initial media speculations indicated a significant decrease in fuel costs in Pakistan. According to sources, a recommendation was made to decrease the price of petrol by Rs. 8.27 per litre, resulting in a potential drop from Rs. 255.63 to Rs. 246.36. Similarly, a suggested reduction of Rs. 6.96 per litre for High-Speed Diesel (HSD) would have reduced its cost from Rs. 258.64 to Rs. 251.68. However, the government ultimately chose to maintain the current prices.

The Rising Petrol Levy

In an effort to achieve its goal of collecting Rs. 1.281 trillion in levies for the current fiscal year, the government recently raised the petrol levy on petroleum products. This decision was made with the intention of generating extra income to tackle various urgent economic issues, while keeping fuel prices stable.

The government made major changes to the petroleum levy for different fuel products. As of March 16, the levy for petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) went up by 16.67%, from Rs. 60 to Rs. 70 per litre. The levy on kerosene oil also increased significantly by Rs. 10.91 per litre, going from just Rs.0.05 to Rs. 10.96 per litre. Even light diesel oil was not exempt from the increase, with the new levy now at Rs. 7.75 per litre.
