NIPPON Showcases Hydrogen Car and Bike in Pakistan: Claims 1,500km Driving Range

NIPPON Energy (NIPPON HEV) has introduced its hydrogen-powered car and motorcycle in Pakistan, attracting significant attention with claims of an impressive 1,500km driving range on a single 3kg hydrogen cylinder.

The unveiling took place at a recent exhibition, where the company said the vehicle uses hydrogen produced from ordinary tap water through a solar-powered electrolysis system. According to NIPPON, the technology offers an environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to conventional fuels. The company has priced the hydrogen-powered car at PKR 2,499,999 and claims to have received more than 1,200 car bookings and 8,000 motorcycle bookings on the first day.

Home Hydrogen Refueling

NIPPON says users can generate hydrogen at home using a solar-powered electrolysis unit. The company claims the system can produce 3 litres of hydrogen per minute, allowing the vehicle’s hydrogen cylinder to be refilled quickly using high-pressure equipment.

Experts Urge Caution

While the announcement has generated excitement, several of the company’s claims have raised questions within the automotive community. Hydrogen-powered vehicles require significant energy to separate hydrogen from water, compress the gas, and convert it back into electricity to power the vehicle. Each step results in energy losses, making the process generally less efficient than directly charging a battery-electric vehicle with solar power.

Another concern is hydrogen storage. Safe storage of 3kg of hydrogen typically requires advanced carbon-fiber tanks capable of handling pressures between 350 and 700 bar, along with specialized refueling infrastructure. Industry observers have also pointed out that leading hydrogen vehicles, such as the Toyota Mirai, typically achieve around 100–130km per kilogram of hydrogen. NIPPON’s claimed 500km per kilogram would significantly exceed the performance of existing commercial hydrogen vehicles and will require independent verification.

Local Manufacturing Plans

NIPPON says the current vehicle displayed in Pakistan has been imported from Japan. However, the company plans to localize production, aiming for 85% local manufacturing in future batches.
