No More Challans for Private Number Plates in Punjab: A Game-Changer for Vehicle Owners

In a first-of-its-kind move, the Excise, Taxation & Narcotics Control Department of Punjab has officially terminated the centralized manufacturing system of government-issued number plates for vehicles.

Now, private vendors are entrusted with the responsibility for producing vehicle number plates in accordance with an official format, in the Punjab form. This policy is intended to reduce the process and give a vehicle owner the opportunity to get compliant number plates the same day after registering their vehicles, and avoid long waiting periods and possible fines many were subjected to in the past.

New Directives for Traffic Police

To avoid more inconvenience and ensure that the public is not unfairly penalized, the Excise Department has issued new directions to the Traffic Police. The important instructions are the following:

1. Focus on Format Verification: Traffic officers will only have to take care of the number plate, ensuring it complies with the official Punjab format. Additional requirements are not required.
2. No Requirement for Government Plates: Citizens are no longer required to display government-issued number plates. As long as the number plate is in a prescribed format, it is considered legal.
3. No Fines for Private Plates: Officers are forbidden to impose any fines and other penalties on individuals who use private number plates if they are following the approved format.

What Does This Mean for Vehicle Owners?

For vehicle owners, this is a tremendous relief in policy. Gone are the days when you had to wait for government plates, which could take weeks or even months, before receiving the plates. Now, it is possible to obtain your number plate as soon as your vehicle registration is done by a private vendor. This move is expected to not only save time, but also save the risk of getting challaned (fined) for something which was out of the owner’s control.
