Hyundai is taking a different route toward electrification with the upcoming Santa Fe EREV. Scheduled to arrive in the first half of 2027, the new version is expected to offer more than 600 miles, or roughly 965 km, of total driving range while keeping electric propulsion at the center of the driving experience. Hyundai says the vehicle will be built at its Alabama manufacturing facility in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n

For Pakistani buyers, the interesting part is not simply the range figure. The Santa Fe EREV could represent a practical middle ground for drivers who want the smooth, responsive feel of an EV but are not ready to depend entirely on public charging infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\n

What Is an EREV?<\/b><\/h2>\n

EREV stands for Extended-Range Electric Vehicle. You may also see the term REEV, or Range-Extended Electric Vehicle, used for essentially the same concept.<\/span><\/p>\n

The key difference from a conventional hybrid is how the vehicle is driven. In an EREV, the electric motor is primarily responsible for moving the vehicle, while the petrol engine is used to generate electricity when the battery needs additional energy. Hyundai has previously described its EREV system as an electric-drive setup in which the engine is used for battery charging.<\/span><\/p>\n

That means the experience is closer to driving an EV than a traditional hybrid. You get electric motor response and instant torque, while the petrol engine provides a backup source of energy for longer journeys.<\/span><\/p>\n

How the Santa Fe EREV Could Work<\/b><\/h2>\n

Hyundai has not yet released the final technical specifications of the Santa Fe EREV, so details such as battery capacity, engine displacement, motor output, charging speed and pure-electric range should not be treated as confirmed.<\/span><\/p>\n

What Hyundai has confirmed is the overall direction. The company says its EREV technology is designed to provide an EV-like driving experience while reducing reliance on a very large battery. Hyundai previously said its architecture could support two electric motors and four-wheel drive.<\/span><\/p>\n

The result is a simple proposition: use electricity for everyday driving and have a petrol-powered generator available when additional range is needed.<\/span><\/p>\n

The most attention-grabbing figure is the expected total range of more than 600 miles. That works out to approximately 965 km, although the final certified figure and real-world range will depend on the production vehicle and testing conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is also important not to confuse this with a 965 km electric-only range. The figure represents the vehicle’s total usable driving range with its electric powertrain and range-extender system working together.<\/span><\/p>\n

For long-distance drivers, that distinction could be more important than the headline number itself. An EREV can reduce the need to plan an entire journey around charging stops because petrol remains available as an additional energy source.<\/span><\/p>\n
